Genoa: relatives are reunited with loved ones’ bodies

Coffins carrying the victims of the Genoa bridge collapse began to be laid out in a hospital chapel on Thursday (August 16) with grieving relatives huddled next to their loved ones.

An 80-metre-long section of the bridge, part of a motorway linking the port city of Genoa with southern France, gave way on Tuesday (August 14) in busy lunchtime traffic, sending dozens of vehicles into free-fall and killing at least 38 people.

A chief magistrate has said some 10-20 people are still missing.

One man stood in silence with his hands on the coffin in front of him. Other relatives were comforted by family members as they wiped away their tears.

A state funeral will take place in Genoa on Saturday (August 18).

ITALY has declared a “state of emergency” that will last a YEAR as shocking pictures show the Morandi bridge crumbling weeks before it collapsed killing 39 people.

A disturbing photo shows the 50-year-old Genoa bridge apparently buckling in the middle, while other parts and cables hang loosely from its edges.

Part of a busy toll motorway linking Genoa with France, the bridge collapsed during a violent lightning storm, sending 35 cars and trucks crashing 150ft to the ground below.

Many of these were flattened when tonnes of broken concrete and twisted steel from the bridge itself then landed on top of them.

Among the dozens dead were three children, while a handful of survivors – some heard screaming in desperation – were pulled from the rubble yesterday.

Italian Interior Minister Matteo Salvini said tonight that the search is continuing for people under the rubble of the collapsed bridge in Genoa, but he has declined to say how many people are feared missing.

He told Italian radio: “It was affected by extremely serious corrosion problems linked to the technology that was used (during construction).”

Dave Parker, from New Civil Engineer, today told Radio 4’s Today: “The mafia had a very big finger in the pie of the concrete industry back then, charging full price and putting less cement in.”

And Canada’s Globe and Mail reports that “mafia-related companies are known to have infiltrated the Italian cement and reconstruction industries over the decades, and prosecutors have accused them of doing shoddy work that cannot withstand high stress”.

Website reported there had always been “structural doubts” about the bridge, while engineering professor Antonio Brencich said it needed constant maintenance.
